No. 2: National Monuments + Sexual Harassment

Corrections:

• First, Zach mentioned there aren’t any wilderness areas in Utah. There are actually 33 wilderness areas in Utah, most of which were established in 1984 and 2009. The Utah Wilderness Act of 1984 established 12 wilderness areas. The bill was sponsored by Utah Republican Senator Edwin “Jake” Garn and co-sponsored by Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch. Most of the other wilderness areas in Utah were part of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009.
• Next, Zach mentioned that Utah wilderness legislation needs to be introduced by the Utah delegation. Members of Congress rarely introduce legislation to protect lands outside their own state, but this has happened in Utah. A good example is America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act which would add more wilderness throughout throughout Southern Utah. It was originally introduced to Congress by Utah Representative Wayne Owens in 1989. Recently this legislation has been introduced by Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and Representative Alan Lowenthal of California.
